Since 2006, I have been working with memory and fiction as thematic interests. These drawings are from two series of work, Plank Road and Still life. In the latter, I was drawing my grandparents’ farm from memory. The act of tracing a path through an intimate space has meant recalling not only the width of hallways in relation to my body, or the angle of the greenhouse roof, but also my emotional connections with the house and its landscape. I began this series as an interest in a place of personal significance, but it has become so much more. In the second series (depicted in the last three images), I drew directly from 17th century Dutch still life paintings. Both series of drawings came from a fascination with memory, and our creation of fiction within it.
Unless otherwise noted, drawings are in chalk, conté, and pencil on rag paper.
