Bio / Contact

Katie Belcher is an artist, cultural worker, and curator based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Of settler ancestry, Katie was born on unceded Algonquin territory outside of Ottawa, Ontario and for the last fourteen years has been rooted in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.

In her studio presently, Katie is making monumental with-drawings in an effort to score a remembered gesture. Her drawings have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Recent projects include FEATHERS (Studio 21, Halifax, 2017), En faisant (HERMES, Halifax 2015), and In times furrows (Queen Street Studios, Belfast, 2013). In 2012 she was awarded Canada Council’s studio at the Cité internationale des arts (Paris, France). Katie holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

As Artistic Director of Eyelevel, an artist-run centre in Halifax, Canada, Katie has challenged modes of presentation and has a particular interest in cultivating gathering spaces for discussion. Since 2013, working with an energetic and curious group of Board and committee members, she has stewarded Eyelevel through a period of transition from gallery to spaceless programming. She is one of four managing artists for HERMES cooperative, is Co-President of Atlantis (the Association of Artist-Run Centres from the Atlantic), and sits on the Board of the Artist-Run Centres Collectives Conference (ARCA).

Drawing at Lunenburg School of the Arts (Lunenburg, Canada, March 2015).
